Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters came upon the earth. – Genesis 7:6
The worldwide flood changed everything. Noah and his family were the only ones spared from the flood because they followed God. Even at six hundred years old, Noah’s faith was amazing, and God changed the world through him. He can change many things through you too.
Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed and said to himself, “Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?” – Genesis 17:17
Abraham is the father of God’s Old Covenant and New Covenant people – billions of people through the ages. Though he was one hundred years old, God used him to be the seed bearer of many people. His life displays the truth that anything is possible with God (Mark 9:23).
Now the eyes of Israel were dim with age, so that he could not see. So Joseph brought them near him, and he kissed them and embraced them. – Genesis 48:10
Israel was the name God gave to Jacob after they wrestled. He was the father of the twelve tribes of Israel. In his old age, he pronounced blessings on his sons and grandchildren. It’s important to pass on blessings to the next generation when you are older.
Now Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh. – Exodus 7:7
Though Moses would be considered far past his prime in today’s world, God used him at age eighty to free over two million Hebrews from Pharoah’s wicked rule. Moses doubted his abilities, but with God’s help, he watched miracles unfold. You are never too old to bring glory to God.
The Lord will bring a nation against you from far away, from the end of the earth, swooping down like the eagle, a nation whose language you do not understand, a hard-faced nation who shall not respect the old or show mercy to the young. – Deuteronomy 28:49-50
God’s Word clearly states that the old deserve respect. Only godless people disrespect those who are elderly. God affirms your value even in old age.
And he said to them, “I am 120 years old today. I am no longer able to go out and come in. The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not go over this Jordan.’” – Deuteronomy 31:2
Moses spoke these words as he appointed Joshua to be the next leader. Part of getting old is accepting your lot and appointing others to do what you can no longer do. This is all part of God’s master plan.
Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you. – Deuteronomy 32:7
One of the blessings of getting old is sharing wisdom with younger generations. It is a powerful responsibility and privilege, and something God wants you to do to serve others.
For when Solomon was old his wives turned away his heart after other gods, and his heart was not wholly true to the Lord his God, as was the heart of David his father. – 1 Kings 11:4
Getting old does not mean you have the right to stray from God’s will. Solomon threw away the best part of his life in his older years. His story is a warning for all of us.
Do not cast me off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength is spent. – Psalm 71:9
So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to another generation, your power to all those to come. – Psalm 71:18
God is with us as we’re getting older. He promises never to leave or forsake us (Heb. 13:5-6). As we age, we can tell others about the great things God has done for us, in order to pass on our faith.
They still bear fruit in old age; they are ever full of sap and green, to declare that the Lord is upright; he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him. – Psalm 92:14-15
Old age does not equate to uselessness. As you trust in God, he will keep bearing spiritual fruit through your words and actions.
Young men and maidens together, old men and children! Let them praise the name of the Lord, for his name alone is exalted; his majesty is above earth and heaven. – Psalm 148:12-13
No matter what age we are, we are to praise God. Every day, commit to praising God for his name and his splendor. This will lift your spirits.
The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their gray hair. – Proverbs 20:29
Though you may resent your gray hair, God considers it glorious. Even if your strength has waned, God still loves you and values you.

As we get older, we still need to heed God’s warnings. We need to seek God’s wisdom instead of choosing foolish ideas.

God promises to give you gladness, comfort, and joy in place of your mourning and sorrow. You can turn to this verse for encouragement and hope when you are grieving.

And there was a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin. – Luke 2:36

Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness. Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good. – Titus 2:2-3
These verses pack many directives for older men and women. They affirm the great plans God has for older people to minister to younger people in the church.
